Gibraltar: Where Europe Ends and the Monkeys Rule

Some places are difficult to describe because they don’t quite fit into a single category. Gibraltar is one of them.

It’s British. It’s on the southern tip of Spain. You pay with pounds and can stand in Europe while looking across the Strait of Gibraltar toward Africa.

With only a day to explore, we originally hoped to take Gibraltar’s famous cable car to the top of The Rock. However, during our July 2026 visit, the cable car was closed as part of a major modernization project. Instead, we hopped aboard a guided bus tour that packed Gibraltar’s biggest highlights into just a few hours and in the end, it turned out to be the perfect way to experience this tiny British Overseas Territory.

Inside the Rock of Gibraltar

Our first stop took us beneath Gibraltar itself.

The Great Siege Tunnels, later expanded during World War II, transformed The Rock into a military fortress. Walking through the maze of tunnels, it’s hard to imagine the engineering required to carve miles of passageways directly into solid limestone.

During World War II, Gibraltar became one of Britain’s most strategic military bases, controlling access between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The tunnels housed soldiers, equipment, hospitals, storage rooms, and command centers; essentially creating an underground city hidden inside The Rock.

A Hidden Wonder

If the tunnels revealed Gibraltar’s military history, St. Michael’s Cave showcased its natural beauty.

Massive limestone chambers stretched high above us while dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, formed drop by drop over thousands of years, filled every corner. Carefully placed lighting highlighted the rock formations, giving the cave an almost otherworldly glow.

The Cathedral Cave, the largest chamber, is especially impressive. It’s so vast that it now serves as a concert venue, with remarkable acoustics and seating built right inside the cave.

Meeting Gibraltar’s Most Famous Residents

Of course, no visit to Gibraltar would be complete without meeting the locals.

The Barbary macaques are the only wild monkeys in Europe, and they clearly know they’re the stars of the show. They wander freely around the Upper Rock, lounging on walls, climbing railings, stealing snacks right out of tourists hands, and confidently posing for thousands of photos every day.

They’re entertaining, curious, and completely unfazed by people. These monkeys have mastered the art of convincing tourists they’re in charge.

Spoiler alert: they probably are.

Standing at the Edge

Our final stop was Europa Point, home to Gibraltar’s iconic lighthouse.

Standing beside the lighthouse, the views stretch in every direction. Behind you rises the massive Rock of Gibraltar. Ahead lies the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. On a clear day, the mountains of Morocco are visible across the water as Africa sits just a few miles away.

Looking across two continents while ships pass through one of the world’s busiest waterways is a reminder of just how strategically important this tiny peninsula has been for centuries.

After a morning of exploring, it only seemed fitting to embrace Gibraltar’s British side with a classic lunch of fish and chips. There’s something delightful about sitting at a café on the southern tip of Spain and enjoying one of Britain’s most iconic meals.

It was the ideal way to refuel before heading back across the border into Spain and one more reminder that Gibraltar is unlike anywhere else we’ve visited.

From exploring wartime tunnels hidden inside the Rock to wandering through a spectacular limestone cave, sharing viewpoints with Europe’s only wild monkeys, and ending at a lighthouse overlooking two continents, Gibraltar offered experiences unlike anywhere else on our Spain and Portugal adventure.

Happy adventuring, Rochelle
