I believe each of my boys was made on purpose for a purpose. This belief is just one of the reasons I capitalize on February’s focus on love to affirm just how valuable these little men are. Beginning February 1st, I post a new reason why I love my little guys on their bedroom doors after they’ve gone to sleep. Sometimes the reason is related to a characteristic of their personality. Other times the reason is a quirky trait that makes them unique. I also use this opportunity to reinforce a positive behavior they’ve exhibited. When Valentine’s Day arrives, they have a collage of colorful hearts taped to their doors to remind them of their worth.
How It Works
The daily love affirmations are very easy to implement. For less than $4.00 it gets my boys to pop out of bed each morning to see what’s been added to their door. I use my Cricut to cut out the hearts. I cut one heart for each boy for each night, between February 1 and February 13. If you don’t have a Cricut, here’s a link to a heart template. If you want to get even simpler, here’s a link to pre-made affirmations.
After I cut out all 26 hearts, I handwrite one of the many reasons my boys are special individuals on each heart. Common messages are; you are kind, you’re smart, you are a good brother, you are funny or you are patient. The affirmation hearts center around a simple sign that reads, “mom and dad love you because….”
The Results
The boys really enjoy this Valentine tradition. Mom and dad do too.
