The Baggage’s Bag Recommendations

You can’t have a blog named Mommy Baggage and not have a few recommendations on travel bags. Whether you’re traveling domestically or abroad, planning a trek into the backcountry or a day hike, here are a few of Mommy Baggage’s bag recommendations.

Mommy Baggage’s Recommendation: Backcountry Pack

Venturing into the backcountry can be very rewarding. Untouched landscapes and little seen vistas are the prize for lugging your gear miles and miles over less traveled trails. It’s important to have to right pack so the burden of those miles is easier to bear. My backcountry pack is the Kelty Coyote 70L. Its lumbar support, thick mesh straps and adjustable suspension system makes for easy treks with heavy loads. The 70L pack is just the right size for 2-4 nights in the backcountry, which is about my limit. The pack is hydration compatible as well. However, the best feature of the Coyote is that the lid converts to a sling pack for day trips. The Coyote 70L was perfect for a backcountry adventure to the Porcupine Mountains with one of my best friends as well as a family trip to Mantiou State Park and on a section of the Superior Hiking Trail.

Watch my YouTube video about this pack here. Plus, if you watch the video and just have to have my t-shirt, you can get your very own at Cabin No. 4 Gear.

Mommy Baggage’s Recommendation: Day Hiking Pack

For day hiking, I prefer a versatile and light weight pack. Less is more. For this reason, I really like the Osprey Tempest 9L pack for day hikes. It’s just large enough for water, an extra layer and a few trail snacks. It also has a great ventilation system, so fewer sweaty backs. This pack also has an external hydration sleeve as well a bungee system for additional storage. I’ve lugged this pack through several Minnesota State Parks including Interstate State Park and Jay Cooke State Park as well as the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan.

Watch my YouTube video about this pack here. Plus, if you just have to have the water bottle pictured above, you can get your very own at United By Blue.

Mommy Baggage’s Recommendation: International Travel Bag

When it comes to international travel a roller bag is not the best option. Traversing airports, train stations and cobblestone streets means a backpack style bag is better. Ever since I purchased the Eagle Creek 70L Maiden Voyage pack 12 years ago, I’ve been hooked. The Maiden Voyage is a simple bag with few compartments but has a detachable day pack that can be clipped on the carrier’s front. This feature makes access to passports, travel guides and other necessities so simple. I love to couple this bag with Eagle Creek’s packing cubes to help keep the bag organized. I’ve hauled this bag across a good section of Europe including Amsterdam, Rome, London, Paris, Prague, Munich and Athens.

Mommy Baggage’s Recommendation: Domestic Travel Bags

Personal Item Bag

The Camden bag by Sherpani is my favorite domestic travel bag. I often use this as my personal item on domestic flights for work as well as for leisure. The bag easily accommodates a laptop and has an internal mesh pouch to store a water bottle. The bag stands out from all others because it can be carried as a tote, an over-the-shoulder or cross body bag or backpack style. The versatility continues when you deplane as this bag conveniently slides on top of a roller bag for easy airport maneuvering.

Carry On Bag

My favorite carry-on domestic travel bag is the Eagle Creek WayFinder 30L backpack. Watch my video on packing this bag here. The packing cubes I use are by Gonex and are amazing as well. When traveling with just a carry-on bag, I prefer a backpack-style bag. I can easily navigate escalators and crowds of people with little worry. The other benefit of this bag is that it fits underneath an airplane seat, no more jockeying for overhead bin storage during the boarding process. Not only is this bag cute, but it also has many useable features. I love the side zip-pouch to easily access your phone or wallet and the separate sleeve for electronics/cord storage. This bag is my go-to for quick weekend trips.

I hope you enjoyed Mommy Baggage’s bag recommendations for all your travel needs.

Happy Adventuring, Rochelle
