Looking up at the night sky is mesmerizing. I have vivid childhood memories of driving with my grandpa and looking at the stars. He’d try to point out the more popular formations like the big and little dippers and like clouds, I’d make shapes in my imagination of groups of stars. The memory of my grandpa and a love for the outdoors prompted me to put together an evening of activities that introduced my kids to the night sky. I decided to put together a s’mores and stargazing party. The party was also part of our Family Alphabet Adventures.
Party Decorations
We hosted our family s’mores and stargazing party in our backyard on the patio near our fireplace. I started by draping a 6-foot table with a midnight blue disposable table cloth. We had an old pallet in the garage so I propped that on the table against the house. To decorate the pallet I hung a string of fairy lights with white, geometric shapes. The lights are battery operated so there is no need to worry about a power source. To add some color to the pallet I made a star banner with my Cricut. I chose midnight blue, gold and a glittery cardstock paper. The final touch of color on the pallet is a constellation chart I found on Etsy. I backed the charts with gold glittery cardstock paper.
On top of the table I set out a two-tiered tray with all the s’mores fixin’s. I included chocolate chip cookies, graham crackers, fudge stripe cookies, peanut butter cups and of course chocolate bars and marshmallows. The boys had fun coming up with new s’mores combinations. To complete the table decorations, I assembled a telescope my oldest son had received as a gift a few months back. Next to the telescope, I laid out a printable star guide I found for FREE. To add a fun activity to our party, I created star gazing flashlights using a printable, cupcake wrappers and a couple of rubber bands.
The charts and the flashlights were not only fun, they were very useful in helping the boys find constellations. I also bought a constellation book on Amazon that they skimmed as we were making s’mores and enjoying the fire. We were able to find the big and little dippers as well as conseopia and the north star.
