Christmas lights. The sparkle and glow of Christmas lights are one of my favorite parts of the entire holiday season. Every year our family visits one (sometimes several) Christmas light displays. This year we chose Sam’s Christmas Village and Light Tour in Somerset, Wisconsin. Sam’s is just two years old, it first opened in 2019, but is no amateur display. The 40 acre, woodsy setting along the Apple River is ideal for strolling in the glow of the tour’s over 6 million lights.
We chose to visit Sam’s on a walk-through only night. On Mondays and Tuesdays, the display is drive though only. We went on a Thursday night hoping crowds would be lighter. We also wanted to attend when the vendors would be open in the European Style Christmas Village. Click here for details on display hours, admission prices and vendor availability. Upon arriving, there were plenty of workers to direct traffic, guide us to an on-site parking spot and help us purchase tickets.

With ticket tags attached to our jackets, we walked down the 500-foot lit tunnel to the Christmas Village. The village’s centerpiece is the 50 foot animated tree. Surrounding the tree are more than a dozen vendors as well as a live reindeer who poses for pictures. The light tour starts and finishes at the village. The light tour follows a one-way gravel path that meanders over dozens of acres and boasts more than 25 lighted displays.

Along the path, you’ll find vendors selling hot cocoa and warm adult beverages. If the beverages don’t warm you up, there are several fire pits to pause a moment at and thaw out a bit. Many of the displays, like the giant castle and the over-sized ornaments, serve as great photo opportunities; inviting visitors can step inside these illuminated features. If you’re having an “off” night like my 8-year-old, this is the picture you’ll get.
Our family enjoyed our time at the light tour. We may need to add a trip to Sam’s Christmas Village and Light Tour to our list of holiday traditions.
