Along with apple orchards and pumpkin patches, I think a trip to the pizza farm needs to be added to everyone’s fall bucket list. We recently spent an enjoyable Sunday on the lawn of Pleasant Grove Pizza Farm in south-central Minnesota enjoying the tasty farm to table pizza and a crisp autumn afternoon.
Preparing for the Pizza Farm
The focus at the farm is on the pizza; ingredients and the wood-fired crust. You provide the rest. At Pleasant Grove Pizza Farm, you’ll need a reservation to maintain social distancing and overcrowding. With your date and time picked out, start packing. We opted to bring a 6-foot portable table and folding chairs. You could also choose to bring camp chairs or even just a blanket. I covered the table in this fun picnic print disposable cloth and then added additional table wear.
I dug a cute wicker picnic basket out of a back closet at home and used it to carry all our stuff to the farm. Inside the basket, I loaded red plastic plates, silverware, black cloth napkins and glasses. I use these glasses for a lot of parties including our Halloween and anniversary parties. To add to the ambiance of our pizza farm experience, I brought appetizers, beverages and dessert. Pleasant Grove allows guests to bring wine, beer or other beverages. In fact, if you go on Sunday you can get Half Pint Brewing to deliver growlers to the farm. To complete the tablescape I added a red cake stand to display dessert. We stopped for to-go slices of pie however they are not pictured here. It was windy and I feared our pies would fly away.
Placing a Pizza Order
Once settled, we used the online menu to decide what to order. Orders are placed inside the barn. You receive a number and then listen for the bell to ring and your number to show up on the whiteboard outside the pick-up window. To pass the time while waiting for our pizza to be ready, we played board games. It can take as long as 45-60 minutes for your pizza order to be complete. Other diners had similar ideas. Some brought a football to toss around or soccer nets to keep kids entertained. There are a few animals on the farm to visit as well as a walking path to stroll through while you wait.
The pizza is delicious. We ordered the Ole (only half with banana peppers) as well as an order of pizza fries. Mom and Dad ended up eating at the table while the boys sprawled out on the blanket gnashing pizza.
Our afternoon at the pizza farm was a perfect way to spend a fall day. Pizza lovers should try this experience. Pleasant Grove is near Waseca, MN but there are several pizza farms in the state as well as western Wisconsin. See here for a full list of all the thirteen possibilities. One is sure to deliver on a tasty farm to fresh pizza experience.
