Nunchucks, throwing stars and karate kicks. It’s the stuff little boys who love to pretend to be ninjas envision. Those fantasies of breaking boards and earning a black belt came to life when we celebrated our six-year-old with a Ninja Birthday Party.
Before guests arrive at the party, send ninja invitations. The invites set the tone and theme of the celebration before the first party-goer arrives. To create the invitations use a 1.5-inch red ribbon for the headbands, a 1/4 inch black ribbon for the ninja body and black and white card stock for the body of the invite and the ninja’s face. The ninja’s eyes are made using black beads.
Welcome Ninjas
When guests arrive at the Ninja Birthday Party, greet them with themed decorations and an inflatable ninja. On the front door, hang a vertical happy birthday sign with a Chinese new year paper garland. More garland leads guests from the entryway to the party area. To accent the garland, tack Chinese paper fans to the wall. Another added ninja touch is the latex ninja balloons tied to the banister.
Using strips of white cloth and red and black markers make each guest a ninja headband. The headbands not only made our little party-goers feel like ninjas but also helped me remember the names of each child. Using gray pool noodles and duct tape, make enough ninja sticks for each child. Use these as party favors or as part of any party games you plan to incorporate into the day.
Ninja Decorations
Use a low table to gather all the little ninjas for a birthday lunch and cake. Each guest sat on a large pillow around the party table. To create the backdrop use red and black paper lanterns and accent them with Chinese new year lanterns. A single strip of red paper, adorned with Chinese symbols and a black ribbon, runs between the lanterns.
With the backdrop complete, focus your attention on the table and place settings. Start by covering the table in a black plastic disposable tablecloth. Next layer on red dinner plates and ninja dessert plates. Use black chevron napkins with a water bottle label to secure them. Use the same water bottle labels to cover the party drinks. To complete the place setting use white take-out boxes with a thank you label. You can even add chopsticks for another themed touch.
For appetizers, serve these cute Rice Krispie and gummy sushi. The sushi sits next to a ninja table runner. Use the same runner on the dessert table. The dessert table also features some of the same garland used in the doorway.
The party’s cake was a simple, all-white ice cream cake. To add themed features, use a die-cut machine to create a ninja star and karate figure topper. the same die cut was used to make the dessert table banner.
