I’m not suggesting you neglect your work responsibilities or lie to your employer. I do, however, suggest you plan a day off of work (get your supervisor’s approval) and devote some daylight hours and your full attention to your partner. We recently loaded up our kayaks, dropped our kids off at school and made our way to the river for a date your spouse: play hooky day date.
Focused Couple Time
Our play hooky date idea was easy. We own kayaks, we have access to many nearby rivers and lakes and we love outdoor adventures. The night before we prepped our gear. We were ready to put in just as our kids were starting their school day. I’m sure a few eyebrows raised in the school drop off line with the kayaks strapped to the SUV. We chose to paddle a 14 mile stretch of the Mississippi River from St. Cloud to Clearwater. The early morning offered sunny skies, calm winds and opportunity for rich conversation. Compared to a movie or concert date, day dates often provide chances for more meaningful connection.
About halfway through the journey, we stopped on a small island for a simple lunch. We made a stop prior to our paddle for fruit, cheese and crackers. Instead of being focused on a menu or what drink to order, we spent our lunch chatting about future river trips and outdoor adventures.
Day Date Benefits
Date your Spouse, play hooky does not need to break the bank or take extensive planning. Our date was virtually free. The priciest thing about it; the overpriced latte I ordered before we left. Kayaking together was a nice break from meals and movies and getting dressed up. If you have school aged kids, day dates mean there’s no need to coordinate a babysitter. Bonus.
Other day date ideas include golfing, a trip to a coffee shop or bookstore together or maybe even roaming around the home improvement store planning a future project. If you’ve never kayaked and want to give kayaking a try, I suggest working with a local outfitter or rental shop.
