The first over-the-top birthday party I planned was sparked by a bulldozer cake I saw on Pinterest. I just HAD to make it for our soon to be three-year-old. Before I knew it, I was pumping out a handmade birthday banner and tying caution tape to a wreath at our front door. Since that time, my love for themed parties has grown. Each year I look forward to designing and implementing the next birthday celebration. Here are the details on how that first construction birthday party took shape.
Party Themed Entrance
I like to welcome party goers with a themed front door. I used a wire floral wreath and tied strips of caution tape to it to create this focal point. Two bunches of floor length helium balloons flank the doorway. To hide the balloon weights, tuck them inside yellow construction cones.
Bulldozer Cake
My favorite part of this party was the bulldozer cake. I found the instructions here and made a few modifications to make it work for me. It was the talk of the party.
To supplement the bulldozer cake, I also made cupcakes. Since the bulldozer cake was time consuming, I needed this dessert to be easy. Box made chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting enveloped in construction themed wrappers and picks complimented the cake.
Decorations
The party’s serveware can do double duty as party decorations. Gather plates, napkins and utensils and stage along side a construction cone with balloons. I added a special label tied with tiny black ribbon to the silverware. Layers of polka dot paper made up the placards for the cleverly named dishes served at the party. The main dish was backhoe barbecues with sides of fruit loader fruit, dump truck dill pickles and bulldozer beans. A mini construction vehicle next to each dish just adds to the party’s theme.
Centerpieces
The bulldozer cake was the centerpiece at the main table. To create the other centerpieces, I burrowed a few items from the birthday boy’s toy box and the others were Etsy purchases.
Out of the toy box this front loader centerpiece was born. What better way to celebrate a birthday than with items you already have and toys your child regularly uses.
The front loader was paired with a small construction cone. A number three sticker was stuck to an orange block (also from the toy box) and the centerpiece was complete.
The final centerpiece was purchased on Etsy. More items from the toy box flanked this centerpiece. Find similar construction birthday items here.
Since the construction party, I’ve created barnyard, pirate, ninja, firetruck, dragon and TMNT birthday parties as well as many other special occasion parties for Back to School, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter. It’s always exciting to find a new reason to celebrate.
