The hike to Cathedral Rock is a mere 1.2 miles round trip. The trouble is that most of the distance is straight up. The Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona is spectacular. If you’re willing to claw and rock scramble your way to the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views.
Getting to the trailhead
Parking is challenging at almost all trailheads in the area. Cathedral Rock Trail in Sedona is no exception. We were fortunate to be traveling with my dad who was not interested in this strenuous hike. He was able to drop us off while we did the hike. It takes about an hour to hike to Cathedral Rock, so he visited a few shops in downtown Sedona while we hiked. If you’re not lucky enough to have a ride to the trailhead, be patient. Since the hike is short, parking turns over quickly.
Once you score a parking spot, be sure to use your American the Beautiful National Park pass to cover parking fees or purchase a Red Rock Parking Pass at the vending machine located in the lot. Be warned; parking is strictly enforced in the area.
The hike
The hike up Cathedral Rock is not for adventurers who are fearful of heights. In just over a half-mile the elevation change is about 740 feet. The hike starts off easy with gradual inclines and flat areas. Be sure to stay on the trail. Use the rock cairns as guides. After the first couple hundred yards, the rock scrambling begins. You’ll need to claw your way upwards, mapping out finger holds in the sandstone and wedging your feet in narrow cracks in the rock face. It’s almost as if the rock were guiding you up.
The hardest part of the climb is overcoming your fear of heights. My two boys were my hiking inspiration. About three-quarters of the way to the top, I started to think about the difficult trek we’d have to make down the rock. I almost didn’t continue. The boys were great supports and encouraged me to keep going. I’m so glad they did.
Before you go
A few other things to know before you start the hike up Cathedral Rock. This hike is a popular sunset hike. If you plan to do so was the sun is setting, be sure to pack a headlamp. No one wants to guess their way down in the dark.
What goes up, must come down. Take your time as you make your way back to the trailhead. There is no shame in scooting down the tricky and steep parts on your back side. I did!
