Budapest is jaw dropper. Filled with romance, history, and culture, it’s a perfect city to spend a long weekend strolling and bathing in its beauty. Straddling the Danube, Budapest spans not just the river but centuries of architectural grandeur and everyday magic. The capital of Hungary is really two cities – Buda and Pest – joined by a stirng of elegant bridges. Buda, with it’s hills and castle and Pest with it’s bustle and rattling trams. Together, they create one of Europe’s finest jewels.
Parliament: the Pearl of the Danube
Our first stop was the Hungarian Parliament Building, and it absolutely took my breath away. Its ornate spires and grand dome rise like a fairytale castle on the river’s edge. Often called one of the most photogenic landmarks in Europe, it’s easy to see why. Every angle reveals another detail, another layer of beauty. We wandered around the grounds, snapping photos, and soaking in its sheer scale. Later that evening, we came back to see it illuminated from across the river on the Buda side. The glowing limestone façade reflecting off the water, a view that easily counts as the best free show in town.
Just steps away, the Holocaust Monument, known as the Shoes on the Danube Bank, offers a haunting counterpoint to Parliament’s grandeur. The 60 pairs of iron shoes along the riverbank honor the Jewish Hungarians who were murdered there in 1944 -a sobering and powerful reminder of the city’s history.

Soaking in the Splendor of Szechenyi Thermal Baths
No trip to Budapest is complete without a soak at the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. Fed by natural hot springs, these grand, yellow-walled baths are as rejuvenating as they are beautiful. Locals gather here to chat and play chess at the pool’s edge while tourists float between steaming outdoor pools. We arrived early for a refreshing dip; pure Budapest bliss. Starting in the cooler, active pools, we gradually eased into the warmer ones, letting the heat melt away aches from our 20,000-step day before. It was the prefect reset, a moment of calm in a humming city. Check out this delightful short video of a lap in the active pool.

Bridging the City: Chain and Liberty Bridges
The Chain Bridge is Budapest’s oldest and most iconic river crossing. It’s stately stone lions and sweeping iron chains serve as a link between Buda and Pest. Further south, the Liberty Bridge, painted a vibrant green, has a more relaxed, local vibe – a favorite sport for late night wanderings. Whether you visit in the bright midday sun or under the city’s glow, both bridges are unforgettable parts of the Budapest experience.

Castle Hill
Crossing the river via the Chain Bridge, we took the funicular up to Castle Hill. By navigating the cobblestone streets, we took in the the Royal Palace and the fairytale spires of Matthias Church. From Fisherman’s Bastion, the view over the Danube and Parliament below—is one of Europe’s most breathtaking cityscapes.

Royal Palace
Crowning Castle Hill, the Royal Palace (also known as Buda Castle) stands as a grand reminder of Budapest’s royal past. Today, the palace houses the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum. We opted to skip the gallery and museum and instead wandered the courtyard and terrace of this Budapest skyline landmark.

Matthias Church
Matthias Church with its colorful, diamond-patterned tile roof and ornate spires, looks like something from a storybook. This is the place where Hungarian kings were once crowned. The church’s elegance contrasts beautifully with the rugged stone of Fisherman’s Bastion just outside, making this corner of Buda a hot spot for photogrephers.

Fisherman’s Bastion
Perched high above the city, Fisherman’s Bastion is another storybook site. With white stone turrets, sweeping staircases, and panoramic terraces, it’s dreamy to meander and get lost exploring.

Ruin Bars
We wrapped up our Budapest adventure with a night out at the city’s famous ruin bars. Grungy, creative, and full of character, these bars are tuckeed into the crumbling courtyards of old Jewish Quarter buildings, where mismatched furniture, street art, and twinkling lights come together to form a unique Budapest vibe. The most iconic, Szimpla Kert, feels like stepping into a living art installation — part pub and part time capsule. We grabbed a couple drinks, found a cozy corner, and enjoyed the spirit of the ruin bars.

The Magic of Budapest
The beauty of Budapest lingers with you. Seared in your memory will be the glow of the Parliament at night, the graceful bridges, and the soathing warmth of thermal waters. Budapest is simply unforgettable.
